UK to Provide Nepal 55 Million USD for Roads

June 22, 2008

United Kingdom (UK) has agreed to provide financial help worth 55 million U.S. dollars to Nepal for road constructions over the next four years.

The United Kingdom has agreed to provide 55 million U.S. dollars over the next four years to help the government link all of rural Nepal with roads," local newspaper The Himalayan Times Sunday quoted UK Minister for International Development for Asia Shahid Malik who is on a three-day visit to Nepal.

Malik was speaking during his inspection visit to a section of a rural road constructed with British aid in Kavrepalanchok, some 25 km east of Nepali capital Kathmandu, on Saturday.

Malik is in Kathmandu to observe development works carried out with British support and to meet political leaders.

Over the past five years, Nepali government and donors have invested around 300 million U.S. dollars in developing over 3,000 km of road network and connecting 6 million people. In the next five years, donors will provide an additional 550 million U.S. dollars to upgrade almost 2,500 km of rural roads, the report said.

Malik said, "I'm pleased to be here with the government and donor representatives who are leading this effort. Together with other donors we will help to bring more than 5 million people nearer to roads and help connect all the remaining district centers to the national road network."
